In March 2009, Building a Future in conjunction with the Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture, deployed the Junior Master Gardner Program in the community of Unidad y Fuerza located on the outskirts of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. During the three-day training, program participants learned new and interactive methods for incorporating horticulture into the classroom with a focus on learning by doing. In total, 25 teachers were certified in the curriculum, which reinforces math and science concepts. “The Junior Master Gardner Program has been very important because it has helped me to learn how to implement a more dynamic, creative and enthusiastic education for the children—inside the classroom and in their surroundings.” - Eloisa Dolores Galvez Perez, Elementary School Teacher “As a teacher, I can say the Junior Master Gardner Program is fundamental for the development of every student.” - Maria Velasquez, Elementary School Teacher Future plans are currently under way to expand the program to surrounding communities. The goal is to establish community gardens, which in time, will provide food for people living in these neighborhoods. Junior Master Gardener Program
